Dual Purpose Kayaks

Written by Jason White

In the mind-numbingly confusing field of "angler" eligible kayak models, it gets even more complicated for me, personally. As usual, I up-the-ante by demanding my dollars go one step further. I'm a waterfowler. I could just leave it at that, but what that means is a whole new list of requirements and concerns.

For me, if a single boats covers both bases, then spending the money makes even more sense and becomes more of a necessity than a frilly impulse buy. As I creep into the middle-aged segment, my criteria for purchases becomes more elaborate. One of the big barriers I set for myself is "need/usage projections". I'm over "new stuff" syndrome  just enough to weigh the truths vs fantasy ideas.

Geaux Custom Goes Bare Bones

Written by Jason White

The Louisiana custom boat builder has been building .125 gauge mud boats for a few years, now. The boys at Geaux Custom Boats have dabbled in everything from one off custom boats to main-line models for some big names out there. Their blue-collar attitude towards boat building shows up in tough-as-nails commercial-rated swamp runners from 15 to 20 feet long all over the country. The guys have been soul searching for the last two years. When I met Chad Melerine three years ago, they had three or four distinctly different models in all kinds on configurations.

The best kind of publicity is spontaneous and free, and the marketing gods just keep shining on Rokon.

This is the little company in Rochester that for over 50 years has produced the sturdy motorbike that will take you anywhere.

It puts along through thick woods and up mountains due to its two-wheel-drive system, light weight and hefty power. It will run for nine hours on a full gas tank, and even more if you use the hollow wheels to store extra fuel (no kidding!) It even floats.

They've been featured in movies, celebrities such as Goldie Hawn and James Earl Jones have one, President Bush got one as a gift, the president of Harley-Davidson has one, and the Jordanian desert forces patrol in them.

Parkaphobia

When I was a kid, all the cool older guys had brown camo Columbia parkas. 25 years ago, there weren't many other options, and the price tag kept most of us young fellas in cheaper less effective outerwear. I remember how proud I was to bring home my first Omni parka when I was 21 years old. Finally, I was ready to take on the elements and dress like a real waterfowler.

Plenty has changed since then. Especially with the explosion of high tech-high dollar performance fabrics designed to make the roughest days more tolerable. It's a cheap shot really, in much the same was those Extend-a-man-products are. Bordering irresistible, who doesn't want to wear a force field to the elements, particularly the hardcore duck hunter that seeks out the harshest weather conditions? TerraLux News

I  gave a shout to my boy John at TerraLux looking for their LED upgrade to my Streamlight Stinger XT/HP. It's been a great flashlight but the incandescent bulbs are just inferior light sources and battery hogs. Having purchased their MagLight upgrade a year or two ago, I already know how satifying it is to juice up an old light and the Stinger is a Gem, especially with the longer life and brighter beam afforded by a TerraLux Upgrade. He advised and filled me in on the latest product news from their company. Add a comment Read more...
