Ring in the Summer

Work has so consumed me in the last several months that the ol’ HFG has suffered pretty badly. I’ve been able to get out on the water some, both in the kayak and under power, just haven’t been snapping many shots and writing about it all. I need to do a little better, I know. In keeping with annual traditions, we scooted down to Logan Martin Lake in Alabama (home) and took part in the weekend-long food and beer-fest that we call Memorial Day weekend. It was as advertised and a very much needed break from the office.

On Friday night we chilled by the pool then enjoyed a low country boil on Saturday night in celebration of a friend’s birthday and to formally kickoff the weekend. Sunday smoked butts, sausage, brisket and chicken and served as the platform for the great unwinding. When Monday limped onto the scene, we were pretty much cashed out and limped back to Chattanooga to recover. About 30 minutes after we got home, I got the text to drown some shiners in the river and had just enough energy to jump in the truck to cap the weekend.

The typical mound of goodness for Memorial Day celebration, butts out of frame in foil and stacked like timber.

Don’t miss the awesome Caterpillar Solar light set we used to light the horseshoe pits after dark.

There also was a moment before I went fishing, that this squirrel ran into a pellet from my Gamo.

We managed to get about four hours of fishing in and caught almost everything available to us. It was a wonderful end to a storybook weekend and a vivid reminder of how lucky we are to have all of this in our backyard!.

Chris held the big bass award for the afternoon.

I took home the brown bass award and the biggest air for jumping fish (seriously 6 feet straight up out of the water).
